Bugbear Number 2: The Deceptive Recipe-  If you are providing a ‘recipe’ but in the ingredients section you say ‘use 1 box of yellow cake mix’ or some similar phrase, I have to tell you, I really don’t think that falls into the category of a recipe… All you are providing is some form of cake decorating advice….. and when the cake decorating also consists of ‘one pack of instant frosting’ …again… not a recipe. When I first saw one like this, I laughed, but by the 30th time of getting excited for a great recipe and realising it’s not in fact an actual recipe, but a ripping open of a packet… it became incredibly irritating and entirely disappointing.

This is a ‘bugbear’… A real bugbear, not mine… No wonder the kids were scared…

‘Bugbear’… I’d just like to express how wonderful that word is… BUGBEAR… How brilliant. Most people in the world know that it means ‘something you find annoying or irritating’, but where on earth did it come from? Wikipedia (the fountain of all useless knowledge, not always to be trusted, but i’m sure, legitimate in this situation) explains the origins of this fantastic word as this:

‘A bugbear is a legendary creature or type of hobgoblin comparable to the bogeyman, bogey, bugaboo, and other creatures of folklore, all of which were historically used in some cultures to frighten disobedient children. Its name is derived from an old Celtic word bug for evil spirit or goblin. In medieval England, the Bugbear was depicted as a creepy bear that lurked in the woods to scare children; it was described in this manner in an English translation of a 1565 Italian play The Buggbear.

In a modern context, the term bugbear serves as a metaphor for something which is annoying or irritating. It may also mean “pet peeve.” Bugbear is also another term for scarecrow.’

‘…Bogey, Bugaboo…’ Ha. Brilliant.

How random…

But now you know…

If I use this word in future, you can understand how odd and yet purely delightful I find this word…

And so, I will be sharing with you, from time to time, some of my ‘bugbears’.

Number 1: Indicators. They are on your car for a reason, a flick of a stick and they’re on, they turn themselves off, it’s not hard. Use them.

That is all.
